The Misdiagnosis of Ringworm

It is easy to think that the dry patch of skin that has just developed on your child is eczema and to start to try and clear it up you buy creams from the pharmacist only to find it still does not seem to clear up and worse there are more patches appearing.

After trying different creams and lotions including the hydrocortisone cream that is very effective for use on all types of eczema you may find that it does not clear up at all and one of the reasons for this is that it may not be eczema after all but in fact it could be ringworm.

Now before any panic sets in at the thought of your child having a worm burrowing in to their skin you can rest assured that this is just a name given to this skin condition because ringworm normally appears in the shape of a ring it is red and raised with small bumps on which in fact look like little worms but that is where the similarity ends, solely in the name.

It is really important that you report any skin complaint that your child may have to your doctor in order for him to eliminate certain conditions and be able to correctly diagnose and treat the skin disorder and ringworm is a skin disorder that can be treated and treated promptly if diagnosed quickly if not then it can take a very long time sometimes up to two years to completely eradicate it properly and if it creeps up into the scalp then your child can end up with bald patches, albeit temporary, it will still be embarrassing for them and extremely distressing for you so at least if you have sought medical assistance quickly the results will be less dramatic.
